Eloping

I never seriously considered the idea of eloping. Ryan is so close to his sizable extended family, that it just wasn't an option for us.

Besides, I want the white dress!

Anyway, this weekend we visited with some cousins from out of town that we never get to see, as her husband is in the Navy and they live across the country. Weddings were a good conversation piece with me and another cousin being engaged, so their wedding came up.

They got married when they were 21, after dating for about a month. They went to the jail one day (in Memphis, you get married at the jail), walked through a hallway of jeering prisoners and got hitched! Afterwards, my cousin A had to go and take an Anatomy and Physiology exam. That was it! They recently celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary, and they have such a great relationship. They do want to throw a big party when they are settled and have a house, but that will have to wait until A's husband R is out of the military.

Isn't that a cool story? They wanted to get married...so they did! So simple....I'll have to keep this in mind when I over-complicate matters...I tend to do that quite a bit.

Do you have any unique wedding stories to share? I love a happy ending!

  1. I have a friend that was engaged but got pregnant and had a little girl with her fiance which caused them to push off their big wedding celebration. There daughter just turned 1. One week they just decided to do it and get married. They decided on a Thursday and got married on a Saturday on the beach. She wore a little sun dress. After the wedding they walked up to a Beach restaurant and had dinner with 10 of their friends and family. It was actually incredibly sweet.

It really makes you think about what marriage is all about. It isn't about the big party and the flowers and cake.. it is about two people expressing their love for each other and wanting to be with each other for the rest of their lives. Which is awesome!

  2. Wow, after only a month of dating! My parents did something similar, they dated for about 2 1/2 months, then ran away to the Hitching Post in Cour de Alene Idaho to elope. My sister and I have since been forbidden from eloping by my mom...I guess she wants to take part in a big wedding now!

  3. Overcomplicate to your heart's content- it's what we do. But on the big day, don't let anything get to you. Enjoy the moment, live it up, and remember, you can't take it with you. :)
