The First Dance

Ryan and I haven't decided on a first dance song. He wants the song to have a history behind it for us, while I basically want to evoke the Beauty and the Beast ballroom scene (skip to 1:20):

I LOVED Beauty and the Beast-still do. I don't want the song or the ballroom, but just the feeling, I guess.

(Side note: My sister and I had the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack on cassette tape, and we'd pop it into our Fischer Price tape deck and act out the movie when we were little. I was such an *sshole of a kid that every single time we played this game, I made her be the 3 girls who liked Gaston while I was Belle. I couldn't let poor Allison be Belle once, how awful is that?!)

Anyway, I love Michael Buble's "Everything," but Ryan thinks its so so.

Ryan is pulling for the Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melodies," but I think its so so.

I kind of want the song to sum up our relationship (that sounds unbelievably cheesy when I type it out, but hey, that's what I want), and Unchained Melodies doesn't really do it for me.

I LOVE "Then" by Brad Paisley (I'm from Southeast Missouri, the country part comes out sometimes) but Ryan cannot abide country, and I can't find a non-countrified version of the song.

And if we're going to do a song with lots of history for us, then "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz definitely has the most history for us, but it doesn't seem particularly danceable.

To blow all of this criteria I just mentioned out of the water, I love "Sway" by Dean Martin, though we would have to do a bit of choreography. But it would be bad*ss.

What are you doing for your first dance? Any ideas for Ryan and I?

  1. This is going to be the bane of my existence. We don't have a song that's "our song" so we're pretty much at a loss with this one. You have some really great choices here, though! Do you want to do mid-tempo or slow? Josh and I are looking for something mid-tempo so we can choreograph a fun dance. I love "For Once In My Life" by Stevie Wonder :)

  2. We haven’t completely made our minds up, either, but we’ve got it narrowed down to about three songs, which I’ll post about soon. I personally love “Sway,” and think it would be a great choice!

  3. Beauty and the Beast is my favourite too!

I love "Then" by Brad Paisley, but I understand the whole country issue, my sister and brother in law had the same problem.

I also like "I'm Yours", and if it has a lot of history for you then you should go with it.

  4. I am no help here. We are in the same boat and it seems like we are putting it off more and more! Let us know what you choose!

  5. We are having the same problem, I love old romantic music, like sway. I think that gets my vote. We might be doing 'stand by me' by ben e. king.

  7. I loveee "Everything" by Michael Buble! We are still in-between a few songs. It will be either "Lucky" with Jason Mraz and Colbie Calliet or "Vanilla Twilight" by Owl City. I Like both. We are headed to take dancing lesson soon, so which ever one we can 'actually' dance to will be the winner!

Are ya'll planning on taking any dance lessons?

  8. I vote everything or sway!

We danced to This will be by Natalie Cole. It all went by so fast we could have been dancing to anything! I hardly heard it.

  9. Everything was what Cory and I danced to. So I have a special place in my heart for that song :D

  10. Those are all fabulous songs...I am a huge fan of Michael Buble! I posted about my first dance a few weeks ago I think. Talked about how we let go of our dreams of a choreographed swing dance and have opted for the little swaying simple moment to a song that means something to one of us. Mr Fix It is calling our DJ tonight to tell him what song he'd like to use for the first dance - it is to be a surprise for me until the moment we step on the dance floor :) But the DJ is going to tell us if he thinks it's danceable or not :)

Look forward to hearing what you go with.
